Copied characters look different: fonts and Unicode
A symbol may look correct here but appear as a box or move out of position in another app. First separate a copying problem from a display problem. They can look similar but need different fixes.
1. Check the copied text
Type a short sample such as café, use the copy button and paste into a plain text editor. If that sample arrives correctly, copying worked: investigate the destination app's display or input rules next. If your browser asks for clipboard permission, check its prompt or select the text and copy it manually.
Use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on Windows and Linux, or ⌘C and ⌘V on macOS. On some Phonokey keyboards Ctrl+A inserts a letter, so use the toolbar's select-all button when you want the whole text. Menus and permissions differ between browsers and applications.
2. Boxes or missing glyphs
A box such as □ may mean the font lacks a drawing for that character. Try another font or application with the same text. Fonts vary in their coverage of IPA and mathematical symbols. Check the recipient's environment as well when sharing a document.
Do not replace a symbol merely because another one looks similar. A minus sign − and a hyphen - have different uses. Find out which character the document needs before replacing it to solve a display issue.
3. One visible letter can have two representations
é can be represented as U+00E9, or as e (U+0065) followed by the combining acute accent U+0301. Unicode normalization brings such representations into a consistent form. An application's counting or comparison rules may produce different results even when the text looks identical.
A combining mark normally follows its base letter. In the full IPA keyboard, enter n first and then the syllabic mark to produce n̩. The font controls how the mark is positioned. Copying a mark alone leaves it without the base letter it needs.
4. A particular website rejects the text
Usernames, filenames and passwords may have restrictions imposed by the receiving service. If pasting works in a text editor but fails in a particular field, check that service's instructions. Phonokey cannot change the rules of another website.
5. Describe a problem clearly
- The keyboard and one or two affected characters.
- The browser and destination application.
- What changed between copying and pasting.
Use a short sample instead of sending private documents or passwords. Save important writing in a separate document rather than relying on browser storage as a permanent archive.
