Currency symbols and what they mean
From the familiar dollar ($) and euro (€) to the less familiar tenge (₸) and lari (₾), here are the world's main currency symbols with their names and ISO 4217 codes.

Things that trip people up
- ¥ is shared by the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan. When it matters, write 円 for yen and 元 for yuan, or use the codes JPY and CNY.
- $ is used by many countries: the US, Canadian and Australian dollars, and the pesos of Mexico and others. In international documents, write US$ or CA$, or use the ISO code.
- The dollar sign with two vertical strokes is only a font variation of the same character.
Writing amounts
Where the symbol goes, and what separates thousands and decimals, depends on the country.

Where readers come from different countries, EUR 1,234.56 style with the ISO code is the least ambiguous.
